📌 Overview

Accurate clinical diagnosis and disease surveillance form the backbone of modern healthcare delivery. Established as a training pioneer, Hossana Health Sciences College (HHSC)—the primary public health sciences college in the Central Ethiopia Region—has evolved from its origin in 1989 as a junior health training center to upgraded college status in 1996 and degree-granting programs in 2013.

The Department of Medical Laboratory Science is dedicated to producing highly skilled, detail-oriented laboratory practitioners who perform crucial diagnostic testing, quality control, and scientific analysis to guide patient care and regional public health interventions.

Medical laboratory science students master essential diagnostic disciplines and laboratory management techniques, including:

• Clinical Chemistry & Biochemistry: Analyzing blood, urine, and bodily fluids for metabolic, enzymatic, organ function, and hormonal indicators.

• Hematology & Immunohematology: Performing complete blood counts, coagulation profiles, blood typing, and blood bank cross-matching procedures.

• Clinical Microbiology & Parasitology: Identifying pathogenic bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites through culturing, staining, and microscopic examination.

• Histopathology & Cytology: Preparing tissue sections and cellular samples for pathological and oncological investigation.

• Molecular Diagnostics & Immunology: Utilizing advanced diagnostic techniques, serological assays, and rapid diagnostic testing (RDTs).

• Dedicated Faculty & Staff: Supported by a robust team of 27 academic and technical staff, including 9 MSc degree holders, 9 BSc degree holders, and 9 Technical Assistants.

• Department Demonstration Laboratories: Equipped with 2 modern demonstration laboratories housing diagnostic microscopes, clinical chemistry analyzers, centrifuges, and specimen processing stations.

• Clinical Hospital Rotations: Practicums and internship placements in regional referral, general, and primary hospital laboratories, as well as specialized public health research labs.
