Message from Health Extension Department Head
Empowering Frontline Primary Healthcare Workers to Drive Universal Health Coverage and Community Wellness
📌 Overview
To achieve universal primary healthcare coverage and address the critical shortage of health workers, the Ethiopian government launched the national Health Extension Program (HEP) in 2003. Designed as a sustainable, community-centered healthcare model, the HEP delivers essential promotive, preventive, and basic curative health services directly to households, with a strong focus on women, children, and rural communities.
Originally centered on 16 health extension packages for agrarian communities, the program expanded to pastoral and urban settings, evolving into the Second-Generation HEP with 18 essential health service packages. Over the past two decades, this initiative has transformed national health indicators—dramatically increasing immunization rates, antenatal care, family planning coverage, and outpatient service access.
Taking this national mission to heart, Hossana Health Sciences College (HHSC) has been actively training highly skilled, ethically grounded Health Extension Practitioners for over ten years to sustain primary healthcare delivery across the region and nation.
